School-Based Immunization Clinics
All school-aged children in the catchment area of the Northwestern Health Unit have the opportunity to receive mandatory immunizations at clinics set up at each school site during the school year. Hepatitis B vaccine and Meningococcal C vaccine, voluntary but highly recommended vaccines, are offered to grade 7 students in School-Based Immunization Clinics. Clinic schedules, consent forms and information about the immunizations being administered will be sent home with students through the school.
To protect the health of children against vaccine preventable diseases, all children enrolled in school must complete immunizations as mandated under the Immunization of School Pupils Act (1982) or provide statements of philosophical or medical exemption.
Students who are not compliant with requirements of the Act will be suspended from school. Students who are absent on the day of a scheduled school clinic, will be referred to either local NWHU family clinics or to their family physician to obtain the required immunizations.
Community-Based Immunization Clinics
Public Health Nurses administer immunizations, including influenza during flu season, to adults and susceptible or high risk persons at Community-Based Immunization Clinics. Adults may also make appointments to receive their immunizations at Family Clinics held at local Northwestern Health Unit offices.
Please visit the Influenza Season section for more detailed information.
Schedules for community clinics are promoted through newspapers, posters, radio announcements and cable TV bulletin boards. You may also contact your local Health Unit office or call the VPD Hotline at 1-866-468-2240 for current information on immunization clinics offered by the Northwestern Health Unit.
