Safe Food Handler Course
There are several ways to obtain your Safe Food Handler Certification, including the following:
In-class option
Information about our in-class option includes:
- Cost: $75.00
- Includes food safety course manual and certification exam
- Full-day course
- Accommodates different learning styles
To register for the in-class option please fill out the Safe Food Handler Course/Exam form and then submit it to your local health unit office along with payment.
Unless otherwise specified, registration is due at least 1 week before the course date. Courses may fill up prior to the week before as there are a maximum of 25 spots available per course.
Classes run from 9 am – 4 pm, with a break for lunch.
Online study option
We now offer an online course that is free of charge. To access our online course, visit our Safe Food Handler Course page. Once you have completed the online course, you will need to schedule to write the exam at your local NWHU office for a fee. The exam is not available online. To book the exam, you will need to provide proof of completion of the course. This will be provided online at the end of the course.
You can also read the Safe Food Handler Manual online and then schedule to write the exam at your local NWHU office for a fee.

Book study option
This is a good option for people who need to brush up on their Food Safety skills and are comfortable reading the manual independently. We will provide you with a manual to take home and study. You can schedule Exams at your local NWHU office.
Fill out the Safe Food Handler Course/Exam form and bring it along with your payment to your local NWHU office where you will receive the manual to take home. Please notify us if you have an accessibility request for the exam.

Other course option
In Good Hands is an on-line course that the Thunder Bay District Health Unit offers. This is a convenient option for people who want to work at their own pace. You can complete this option using a mobile device, laptop, or desktop computer. To take the on-line exam, you require access to a webcam via laptop or desktop computer as well as photo identification.

Certificate search and re-issue
We can search for and re-issue lost certificates that NWHU issued for a $10.00 fee. Submit a Request for Food Safety Certificate Search/Reprint form and provide payment prior to search/reissue. You can make payments through your local NWHU office.
