Preventing COVID-19
It’s important to do what we can to protect ourselves, others, and our health care system from viral illnesses. Read more about preventing illness and choosing safer activities.
Preventing viral illnesses
Layering protective measures helps to prevent the spread of viral illnesses. It is recommended that you:
- Stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccines and flu shots
- Stay home when you are sick
- Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
- If you are at a higher risk of severe infection, consider wear a mask in indoor public settings
For more information on how to protect yourself and others, read Public Health Ontario’s fact sheet.
Choosing Safer Activities
How you participate in activities can affect your risk of exposure to COVID-19 and other viral illnesses. Factors to consider when choosing activities can include:
- Your age and personal health status
- The age and health status of those around you
- The settings and activities you are engaging in
Remember that germs spread more easily when in close contact with others. Outdoor activities that don’t involve gathering inside a structure or vehicle are considered safer than indoor activities because there is space to keep distance from others.
