Carl Lindstrom Bursary

The Carl Lindstrom bursary provides an award of $500 to two people entering or returning to full-time post-secondary studies leading to graduation in a profession or field associated with the delivery of public health programs or services at an accredited post-secondary or professional institution. 

The Carl Lindstrom Bursary was made possible by a bequest from the estate of Mr. Roy Carl Lindstrom, a former resident of Kenora.

NWHU awards up to two (2) bursaries each year.

Eligibility

Applicants must be residents of the Northwestern Health Unit’s catchment area.  

Applicants must be students entering or returning to full-time post-secondary studies leading to graduation in a profession or field associated with the delivery of public health programs or services at an accredited post-secondary or professional institution, in the fall of the year the Bursary is granted.  

Public Health related professions include, but are not limited to:

  • Medical Officer of Health, Public Health Inspector,
  • Public Health Nurse
  • Health Promoter
  • Epidemiologist
  • Public Health Dentist
  • Dental Hygienist
  • Public Health Nutritionist/Dietitian
  • Audiologist
  • Speech & Language Pathologist.  

Casual students such as those enrolled in one-credit certificate courses or distance education online programs do not qualify. 

Northwestern Health Unit employees (including summer students and term/casual employees), Board of Health members, and their immediate family members are not eligible to apply. “Immediate family members” includes children, siblings, parents, uncles/aunts, nieces/nephews, grandparents, grandchildren, and step-relatives and in-laws of the same.

Application procedure and form

 The Bursary Application consists of two sections:

  1.  The following Bursary Application Form,
  2. A typed essay in MLA format, 250-500 words (double-spaced) explaining how your education/studies meet the mission of Northwestern Health Unit, which you will submit electronically.

Selecting bursary recipients 

A Bursary Selection Panel made up of one Board of Health member and two senior NWHU management staff will select successful applicants. The panel will evaluate applicants according to the following criteria:

  1. Appropriately completed Application Form 
  2. Content of Essay and Format

The Panel’s decisions are final. The Panel reserves the right to not choose a successful recipient if it decides that no suitable application has been received. 

The health unit will contact successful applicants. Transfer of Bursary funds will be made to successful applicants upon provision of proof of their enrolment in their stated program by their academic institution.
